Studies on Liver Function and Liver Surface Area in Patients of Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract
In 20 cases of chronic obstructive lung diseases( chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and pulmonary emphysema), liver function tests were performed, and surface areas of the liver were measured by means of planimeter from the liver scan with colloidal 198 Au. The following results were obtained.
Functional abnormalities were found in 60% the patients by SGOT (62% in male and 57% in female) and in 37% by SGPT-(31% in male and 43% in female).
In the liver scan, enlarged left lobe of liver, visualization of spleen, and decreased uptake of isotope were found to be 60%, 25%, and 30% of the patients respectively.
Surface area of the liver of the patients was 174+46cm (184+471 in male and 150+32cd in female), which indicated considerable enlargement of the liver. Normal values of the Korean adults were reported to be 148+25c.
